Delightful A-509 Rocking Chair

Many product series by Yrjö Kukkapuro were born in collaboration with architects. So was the A500-series, which was originally created as a part of a planning process for a hospital in Sweden. The architect wanted to invigorate the environment with a seating series, that would combine ergonomics, easy usability and colors that bring energy to their surroundings. At the end of postmodern era in 1985 the A500-series was created.

A509 rocking chair was added to the product series when Yrjö Kukkapuro’s grandchild was born into the family in 1986. Yrjö’s wife Irmeli wished to have a rocking chair to sit with the baby.

The children’s version of A509 was created in 2016 when the family was expecting a great-grandchild to be born. A great example of Yrjö Kukkapuro’s holistic design is that the seating width is the same in the children’s rocking chair as it is in the adult’s. He wanted the dimensions to be so that an adult could sit in the chair and for example read stories to the children.
